Biden: Democracy has Prevailed

Joe Biden has been sworn in as the the 46th President of the United States.

It seems hard to imagine that this has come about after running a campaign largely from his basement, and having such paltry attendance at his rallies.

He did make a show of playing the unifying role. From the USA Today piece:

Biden called for a “fresh start” in Washington and vowed to fight as hard for those who didn’t vote for him as those who did support his candidacy.

“Politics doesn’t have to be a raging fire destroying everything in its path,” Biden said. “Every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war.”

Touching on a theme often embraced by past presidents but largely missing over the past four years, Biden vowed to be a president for “all Americans.” He implored his critics to “hear me out” and “take a measure of me and my heart.” If they still disagreed, Biden said, he could live with it.

I am not sure that the rest of his cabinet will follow his rhetoric. It has only been a few days since others in his party were taking open shots at the outgoing administration. Speaker Pelosi released a statement  yesterday in which she noted the milestone of 400,000 dead from COVID-19 and lambasted the Trump response to the virus.

“As we mourn this devastating milestone, we must come together to move past the failed Trump response to crush the virus and deliver robust, real relief now.”

It is going to be a tough road to actually unify this splintered country, and not just play lip service to it.
