Trump Bids Farewell
President Trump and First Lady Melania left the Whit House this morning a little after eight AM. The New York Post has a piece with a video of the President’s remarks.
Whatever you think about the outgoing president, it has certainly been interesting. From the investigations, to the venom from all corners, I don’t think we have seen anything like it as a nation.
The incoming administration has adopted the slogan of “Build Back Better” and we will see in the early days what that means. There have been rumors of legislation to be proposed in the first days that includes amnesty for illegals, and executive orders that include the Keystone pipeline.
How those ideas translate into building America better I am not sure. With a 50/50 split in the Senate it seems like trying to push a flurry of legislation through congress might be a long haul. I would expect that we will hear a lot about proposed legislation that will end up being slow walked, but executive orders will be the main thrust. The nature of the executive orders may sour some of the more centrist Democrats and make getting legislation through even harder. In both cases, either legislation or EOs, the case is going to have to be made to keep constituents on board, or it may lead to a turnover in power in the upper chamber. The House of Representatives is also not out of reach in the next election.
It is going to be a complicated dance in the first months. They need to project confidence and clarity, but may not have the votes to back up the words.
