The Dance on the Southern Border
There is definitely a mixed message flowing out of the capitol concerning the Southern Border. On one side you have all signals screaming that the old guard is gone and the arms of the US are once again open for any and all. Via Issues and Insights:
On his first day in office, President Joe Biden signed six executive orders on immigration, proposed a sweeping amnesty bill, and ordered the Department of Homeland Security to pause deportations.
The Big Business lobby is also screaming for cheap labor.
The big business lobby is cheerleading President-elect Joe Biden’s massive amnesty plan for the 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living in the United States, calling the initiative one of their many “priorities.”
The message being received by would be travelers from Central America is not one of restraint:
A Honduran migrant worker claimed that a migrant caravan was headed to the U.S. because incoming president Joe Biden would give migrants “100 days” to arrive at the country, in an interview with CNN.
On the other hand, off the record comments from the incoming team tell a different but softer story:
An unidentified senior Biden transition team member told NBC News that the migrants should not come to the U.S. — at this time. “There’s help on the way, but now is not the time to make the journey,” the official said.
So, there is a mixed message for sure, but it looks like it leans toward “Come on in!” There are plenty that think this is just a way to salt the earth in future elections. Whatever the reason, it is entirely up to the Biden administration as to what happens. After the effective shutdown of the border by the Trump team, Biden has no way to point backwards for the blame.
