I’m sure everyone remembers when President Obama went to Cairo and apologized to the world for the United States. Of course that was just the beginning of his effort to say sorry to those that he felt were discriminated against by America. The Pigford lawsuit settlement was an effort at reparations to minorities at home. He was always saying that he was sorry for us, even though I never felt the shame that he did.

Now, President Biden feels like he has to take on same role. On Friday while he was addressing the Munich Security Conference he repeatedly brought up the last four years, and said that we would do better:

While not naming Trump explicitly in his speech, Biden repeatedly lamented damages to the European relationships with the United States and promised to revert back to the way it used to be.

“I know the past few years have strained and tested our transatlantic relationship, but the United States is determined to reengage with Europe, to consult with you, to earn back our position of trusted leadership,” he said.

As part of his message to Europe, Biden specifically promised to work with European leaders including his “good friends” and “outstanding leaders” like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a leader that Trump challenged during his presidency.

“Let me erase any lingering doubt, the United States will closely with our European Union partners, and the capitols across the continent,” he said.

One large issue here is that many of us don’t think the last four years were in error. President Trump held NATOs feet to the fire, and diminished the role of the UN, both of which I strongly agree with. China was treated like the enemy they are. Trump also reaffirmed our relationship with Israel. One of our most important partners that is surrounded by people that would do us both harm.

Another problem is that all of the other leaders are listening to someone that they know is feeble, Why would they waste any energy dealing with Biden at all. It is a waste of their time and ours. They will smile and clap at the appropriate times, and after they leave will completely dismiss the old crazy uncle that can’t run his own house. The more he pops his head up and apologizes the weaker we look as a nation.
