The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh was recently asked if they were going to raise the issue of handing over the killers of Qassem Soleimani with the Biden administration. If you remember, Soleimani was the Iranian General of the Quds force that was killed in a drone strike by the Trump Administration back in January of last year. Here is his answer:
“Solving the case of the martyrdom of General Qassem Soleimani was one of the most important matters for Iran from the first day of this tragedy. Iranian courts have carefully considered the civil and criminal aspects of the case. Judgments will be issued very soon, and we will announce the names of all the criminals and those involved, which will be easier for Iran, according to international law.”
The spokesperson continued, “There is no doubt that the main party involved in the case is the United States, and more specifically, former President Donald Trump, and all the people of his administration are involved in this treacherous murder. They are among the main accused in this case. Therefore, we will go to the end in this case and solve this problem with the United States in all possible legal ways.
The answer didn’t actually address the question, but it is pretty clear who they hold responsible. There is little doubt that Iran is deeply butt hurt over the death though. There was a global memorial on the anniversary of his killing. Their political leaders have made made their intentions to seek revenge known very loudly as well.
So what if the Iranians asked the Biden Administration to turn the “criminals” over as part of a new Iran deal? With the temperature of the rhetoric flowing in and out of DC I’m not sure it wouldn’t be considered.
