President Biden announced today that he wants to nominate Gayle Manchin, Joe Manchin’s wife, to be the Federal Co-Chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission. Joe Manchin is arguably the most powerful man is DC right now. He is a Democrat that was reelected in the very red state of West Virginia. He knows that he can’t tow the liberal line too far or he will get the boot from his constituents pretty quickly.
This is obviously a play to get him in line for upcoming votes in the senate. If the Democrats lose even a single senator from the current 50 50 split,, Kamala can’t come in and toss the tie breaking vote.
Manchin has already come out and said that he doesn’t support changing the filibuster rule with less than 67 votes in the senate. They need him to come down off of that ledge if they want to be able to ram through other very unpopular measures. These of course include the “For the People Act” which takes the power of federal elections out of the hands of each state. It also mandates rules for drop boxes and early voting.
There is also the big infrastructure bill that is being put together right now to the tune of 3 trillion dollars. It is said to be modeled after the green new deal, which most of the country doesn’t seemed inclined to support.
This nomination will obviously be seen for the bribe that it is, and may spell the end of Manchin’s senate career if he starts voting in line with the liberals on the hill.
