The Media is Promising Violence Unless They Get a Conviction of Derek Chauvin

The trial of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has started this week in Minneapolis. This is the final motion towards the culmination of the event that supposedly helped start the BLM movement and triggered riots throughout the country. The trial itself began with the prosecution pulling on the emotions of the jury. Here are some of the opening statements from the prosecutor:

Former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s head and neck for 4 minutes and 45 seconds as Floyd cried out for help, stayed on his neck as Floyd flailed and had seizures for 53 seconds, and then remained on a non-responsive Floyd for another 3 minutes and 51 seconds, prosecutors said during opening statements in Chauvin’s criminal trial on Monday.

“Mr. Derek Chauvin betrayed this badge when he used excessive and unreasonable force upon the body of Mr. George Floyd,” prosecuting attorney Jerry Blackwell said. “That he put his knees upon his neck and his back, grinding and crushing him until the very breath — no, ladies and gentlemen — until the very life was squeezed out of him.”

That is probably going to be the extent of the prosecution. They have little more than emotional pleas and community anger to use in the conviction. The defense has a lot of ammunition to lean on. The fact that Officer Chauvin was using an approved restraining technique, and George Floyd was very high at the time of his arrest, perhaps fatally so. He was also positive for COVID-19 at the time of his death. This all happened after Floyd resisted arrest and fought with police.

Now we are at an inevitable crossroad, The prosecutor had little choice in bringing charges against Chauvin. The emotional outcry and the anger that was stoked in not just the community, but the world, demanded an accounting.

The arc so far has followed the template of the Trayvon Martin death and subsequent trial of George Zimmerman. We shouldn’t forget that Zimmerman was dubbed by the media to be a White Hispanic. It should also be remembered that Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder. The aftermath of that verdict was not what the media had hoped for. They wanted bloodshed and carnage, but it ended up mostly peaceful.

In both of these cases, the media is trying to influence the outcome of the trial based on threats of more violence if they don’t get a guilty verdict. Here is Van Jones, the self admitted communist and CNN contributor discussing the importance of this trial.

Jones said, “Everybody I’m talking to are frustrated, re-triggered, re-traumatized. Seeing that video, seeing the complete contempt for life. You have a generation of African-Americans and their allies — I’m talking this entire young generation—that is watching this to see if America — listen, the system is on trial here. The system is on trial. and I can’t tell you, people have tried to push away from this, move on from this. Today brought it all back home for tens of millions of people. And if this is considered legal conduct from a police officer, if you can do this in broad daylight and not go to jail, it will be perceived as open season, telling police officers from coast to coast you can literally get away with murder in broad daylight. So, this was, I think, today was a brutal day for the people who were able to watch. A lot of people weren’t even able to watch. They said, I just can’t even put myself through it again.”

And there it is, give the media what it wants or else. They tried to impeach President Trump for incitement for doing a lot less then these talking heads do on a nightly basis. They need to be held accountable at some point.
