The Biden Team continues to convulse on a daily basis over the crisis at the southern border. What you don’t hear a lot about is the supposed “Border Czar” Kamala Harris. The administration spokesperson Jen Psaki did field a couple of questions about the border on Friday, but the level of interest in the Vice President’s role seems to have faded from the collective mind of the public.
This is intentional, at least on the VPs part. I have a theory that there is a power struggle going on between the two main women in Joe’s life, his wife Jill, and and incredibly grating Kamala.
It is pretty obvious that nobody wants Joe out in public by himself. One of those two women are always nearby, ready to point him in the right direction or offer instant clarifying remarks to reporters.
My theory is that Jill was trying to get Kamala out of Joe’s ear by chucking her into the melee on the border. This would serve a couple of purposes. Jill could have unfettered access to whatever is left of Joe’s cognitive abilities, and as everyone can see, the border is a place for politicians to die. White House border coordinator Roberta Jacobson was the first one to hit the exit ramp. Although she had promised to make it through the first one hundred days, she has decided to run a little early. This would seemingly leave Kamala in the lurches.
Kamala has been wily about the assignment from the President from the beginning though. When everyone else heard that she was to be put in charge of the border, she quickly clarified, and made it known that she was actually just in charge of the diplomatic effort, not the crisis itself. This was a beneficial tactic on her part. To do diplomacy, you just need a means to communicate. You don’t actually have to travel anywhere. And even better, there a million ways to do it, all of which can be done behind the scenes. That way no one can say she isn’t really doing anything. Nobody believes that she is.
So now we are stuck with an uncomfortable status quo. The White House is left with floating ridiculous trial balloons, like the idea of giving people cash to stay home, and seeing what will mollify the various interests.
But this leaves poor old Joe out swinging in the breeze as the guy in charge. That may be the play here though. If Joe is going to be making an exit pretty soon, then the powers behind him would like the whole issue of the border to go down with him. That way they can blame the whole thing on him and make a few changes to bring the numbers down. If the plan is to get Joe to do two years before Kamala steps in (as required by the 22nd amendment), they need to find another sacrifice, and pretty quickly.
My bet is on Mr. Mayorkas, the increasingly unpopular Secretary of Homeland Security. He can be made the public face of the border failure without too much effort, and nobody will really question another bureaucrat wanting to “spend more time with the family.” In any case, it won’t be the self serving VP. She is pulling a pretty effective vanishing act on the entire border affair, and everyone seems willing to play along.
