What type of government do you have when the means of production is controlled by the state? It isn’t one based on freedom. As a matter of fact, government control of industry is one of the selling points of socialism. By the government taking control of the corporate landscape, somehow that is interpreted as giving control to the people. What it is really is just giving control over to a group of people who have the means to forcibly confiscate wealth from the people governed.
In a lot of socialist countries, the state took control by nationalizing sectors of the economy. This means that they just claim it as their own. Venezuela did this under Chavez to the oil industry. He then went on to install political cronies into key positions because that is what statists do. They reward people for putting them in power. Unfortunately, a lot of the cronies he put in place didn’t know how to run the oil business. This led to the breakdown of the entire sector and helped with the downfall of one of the richest nations in South America.
But what if the private sector just decided to volunteer themselves to the whims of the politically powerful? In both cases the government gains control of the market share. The people holding the reigns of government don’t have to appoint lackeys to lead the industries, they are already there. Why would a free market full of entrepreneurs do something seemingly so suicidal?
Because if they can get most industries to do it, the power is removed from the consumer. It makes sense if you think about it this way. If a couple of industries take an unpopular stand, the people they rely on for business have the most basic way in a market to punish them. They just take their business elsewhere. As long as there are alternatives, it isn’t really a big deal for the consumer.
But what if all of the alternatives are woke too? Then the consumer has no where else to turn. They get to subsidize what they don’t agree with, or just do without. This would normally be rectified in a a free market by competitors stepping up to fill in the demand from consumers that don’t want a side of wokeness with their meal.
Facebook and Twitter have managed to come up with an answer there. They just buy up any competition so that it never becomes a threat. There are antitrust laws that are supposed to deal with market threats, but what if the guys that are overseeing the market happen to have a use for such a monopoly? It might look the other way.
And here we are today where Delta, Apple, and Major League Baseball have decided to team up with the political power of the moment. The market immediately went into action. Some thought leaders even called for boycotts. That is their right as a free society.
But then the corporations had a great idea. They decided to trap the consumers in their bubble of wokeness. That way the peasants with the money have no choice but to finance the speech of corporations they didn’t agree with. Over the weekend, the left organized some of the worlds largest corporations into banding together in the fight against their customers. From PJ Media:
Roughly 100 of America’s top corporate leaders and CEOs gathered both in-person and virtually on Saturday to strategize ways to combat new election integrity laws like Georgia’s H.B. 531. Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a Yale University management professor who helped organize the meeting, framed it as a response to threats of reprisals after Georgia-based companies like Delta Air Lines, Coca-Cola, and Aflac Insurance condemned the Georgia bill. He called election integrity measures “anti-undemocratic.”
“The gathering was an enthusiastic voluntary statement of defiance against threats of reprisals for exercising their patriotic voices,” Sonnenfeld told CBS News. The corporate leaders “recognize that they need to step up to the plate and are not fearful of these reprisals. They’re showing a disdain for these political attacks. Not only are they fortifying each other, but they see that this spreading disease of voter restrictions from Georgia to up to possibly 46 other states is based on a false premise and its’ anti-democratic.”
Forcing me to put money into the pockets of people that actively work against my interests is not freedom. Especially when they are parroting the radical language of racism and “equity” of the group that has the authority to arrest me.
Biden and his team are breaking our country and backing millions of people into a corner. I honestly don’t know what will happen when the majority realizes what has been happening.
