From all outward appearances, it looks like President Biden/Obama is going to treat the tiny nation of Israel like a white kid in a public school. It took Biden over a month to contact Benjamin Netanyahu once he got into office, and has already leaked intel about an Israeli attack to the New York Times.
Now the Biden Brain Trust is trying to get back into Iran’s good graces. He managed to get South Korea to give up 7 billion dollars that the Koreans had frozen in their banking system. The team has also said that they are willing to talk about relaxing sanctions. All the while, Iran is in negotiations with the international community over a new nuclear deal. Biden sent a representative, but he was mostly relegated to the sidelines as China and Russia led the talks.
Iran, for its part, is standing firm on its stance that it is going to keep doing whatever it wants until all of the sanctions are gone. But if the Joe/Barack team is as desperate as they were in 2015 to get a deal, they will be willing to do all kinds of bad acts to get something on paper.
Amidst all of this, the President sent Lloyd Austin, the new defense secretary, to Israel for meetings this week. This comes as the news of a blackout at one of Iran’s most important nuclear research facilities surfaced over the weekend. Iran is now pointing the finger squarely at Israel, and with good reason. They were reportedly part of the stuxnet attack on Iran’s centrifuges back in 2010.
The attack will probably complicate negotiations with Iran. And with the US rep being sidelined in the international discussions, team Joe needs to find an in.
I would be on the lookout for Israel to get screwed in a fairly big way pretty soon. It may be at the UN, as Obama did in the past, or it may be more underhanded in the intel world. Netanyahu would do well to play his cards very close to the vest with the current climate in the new administration.
