President Biden was initially going to send two US destroyers into the Black Sea as a show of force after the buildup of Russian troops began on the border with Ukraine. He quickly reversed course after a mild threat from Russia. From the Daily Mail:
Last week, Turkey said Washington was sending two warships to the Black Sea, in a decision Russia called an unfriendly provocation.
But the Biden administration reversed the decision after the Kremlin warned them to ‘stay away for their own good’, and gave Putin the chance to ramp up his military presence in Crimea and near the Ukrainian border.
White House officials decided not to send the ships to avoid needlessly escalating the situation with Russia over the Ukraine, a US defense official told Politico.
Britain, however, has decided that it isn’t going to lay down while Putin flexes his military muscles. They are planning to send a couple of ships to the Black Sea in May.
Great Britain has informed the Turkish authorities that its warship will enter the Black Sea via the Bosphorus in May, the Turkish NTV channel reported on Monday, without any official confirmation of this news.
Earlier, the British newspaper The Times quoted sources in the Royal Navy as saying that a destroyer and an anti-submarine frigate belonging to the British war fleet would enter the waters of the Black Sea in May to show London’s solidarity with Kiev against the backdrop of tension on the border between Russia and Ukraine.
It looks like NATO may have to go it alone for now against the threats from Russia. If Biden is still following Obama’s lead, the Ukraine may be in Putin’s possession before too long.
