This may look like a huge departure from normal operations, but it is actually pretty common. I have been through the Straits of Hormuz a couple of times and on both occasions we were overflown by Iranian aircraft. One aircraft was even a P-3 that the US had sold to the Iranians back in the days of the shah.  It is pretty amazing that they can keep them working.

This is a big deal though. Iran likes to show the US how much control they can assert over the narrow straits. They could shut down the flow of maritime traffic at a moments notice. About a fifth of the world’s oil, and a third of all seaborne trade transits the straits. That is a very significant chokehold on the commerce of the entire planet.
