There hasn’t been a lot of talk about it, but there was a special election in Texas yesterday for a congressional seat vacated by Ron Wright. He died earlier this year from COVID complications.
His wife and some 22 other candidates jumped into the fray. The contest was open for all comers no matter the party. If no single candidate got over 50 percent of the vote it goes to a runoff between the top two to determine the winner.
And it looks like that is where we are, and the runoff will be between two Republican candidates, Susan Wright (Ron’s widow) and Jake Ellzey. Wright ended up with 19 percent of the vote compared to almost 14 for Ellzey.
Now we get to see the powerbrokers separated from the wannabes in the runoff. Wright has been endorsed by President Trump, and Ellzey has reportedly taken donations from the likes of nevertrumper Bill Krystol.
I’m betting on Susan Wright in the runoff because of the weight of the Trump machine that is pushing her. I haven’t found any information on the runoff yet, but I will keep my eyes out for it.
Remember also that the current House split is 212 Republican to 218 Democrats. There are also 4 more vacancies, with most of those being open Democratic seats. Nancy Pelosi doesn’t have a lot of wiggle room, and we have 4 more chances to increase the pressure on her.
