I have worked most of my life saying “Another day another dollar.” Its just something that says that I worked so that I could get the things I need or want. In reality, I usually got about 70 cents from that dollar, plus or minus a few pennies. That is a little maddening, but it is the price we pay to participate.
If you think about that though, its about a third of the dollar. Have you ever imagined paying all of that up front every year? How about working a third of the year, 4 months, and not get anything. But the rest of the year, you get to keep the whole check. A lot of working people would probably go hungry for a bit. That is one of the reasons that it is taken from each check. Another is that you never see the result of the entire thing until you square up with the government by filing your taxes.
So imagine what you would rather be doing for a third of the year, instead of working and earning those dollars. It probably wouldn’t be donating your time to bureaucrats. An entire third of your time and effort given to someone else for them to do whatever they will with it.
Some people are lucky enough to do what they love and get compensation for it. That is a great thing, but they still can’t do it for free. They have to eat just like everyone else.
Fine, we give up out time and effort because we do need to have certain things. We need to have an environment that allows us to do whatever it is we do. So safety and security are important. That is translated into national defense, meaning an army, a navy, and then further into things like a police force and so on. Sacrificing some of my effort to get those things makes sense.
How about things like abortion? Keep in mind that you aren’t given a choice about what you give up your time for. It is forcibly taken. There is no choice about paying taxes. By extension, there is no choice about giving away your effort, and time to someone who does something you may never need or want.
Everything the government does is on the backs of people who have given up their freedoms to pay for it. If you had a choice would you pay for the National Endowment of the Arts? Or should that just be something that the people who enjoy things like “Piss Christ” should volunteer their freedom to support?
