Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez decided to take a swipe at President Trump with pictures of her Grandmother’s home in Puerto Rico. It was damaged after Hurricane María ravaged the island in 2017. Here is her tweet:
Just over a week ago, my abuela fell ill. I went to Puerto Rico to see her- my 1st time in a year+ bc of COVID.
This is her home. Hurricane María relief hasn’t arrived. Trump blocked relief $ for PR.

The government relief funds were blocked by what looks like bureaucratic smoke blowing, but it is pretty well known that a lot of relief money that makes it to the island actually lines the pockets of the corrupt government. So getting the relief money to Puerto Rico doesn’t mean the average islander gets the benefit of it.
After AOC’s tweet, she was lambasted by many in the twittersphere wondering why such a devout socialist wasn’t willing to spread her wealth to her poor grandmother. Pretty good question when she is living in a luxury apartment, and illegally parking her Tesla around town. All the while her own flesh and blood is dealing with flooding rooms.
Conservative commentator Matt Walsh was nice enough to step in a set up a GoFundMe account to help out. In the short time it was open, it raised over 100 thousand dollars. Unfortunately, it turns out that poor old grandma won’t take the money.
UPDATE: “someone” in AOC’s abuela’s family told GoFundMe that she won’t take the money, even though AOC previously claimed that her grandma was in dire straits (and it was Trump’s fault). @AOC still hasn’t acknowledged this effort or thanked us. Maybe it was the embarrassment? Or maybe getting help from the private sector wasn’t as satisfying as being able to blame the Trump presidency. We may never know. What we did find out though, is the American people are always willing to step in and help.
