Lots of people have been asking questions about why the US is involved in Ukraine, and for good cause. The most noticeable is Tucker Carlson, who asks that question on an almost nightly basis during his monologue. He then takes shots from both the left and right saying that he is being a puppet for Putin’s war machine.
Rand Paul is another threat to the company line. He most recently held up the 40 billion dollar aid package by trying to make sure an inspector general could have oversight of all of the money that the administration is blindly sending to a well documented corrupt bureaucracy.
So the US has very loudly placed itself behind the idea of defending democracy, in a country that has recently banned all opposition parties to the one in charge.
I find it interesting then that small nuggets can still be found that belie the administration’s stated goals. In a New York Times piece published on the 16th of March, we can find this:
Two American military officials said that many Russian generals are talking on unsecured phones and radios. In at least one instance, they said, the Ukrainians intercepted a general’s call, geolocated it, and attacked his location, killing him and his staff.
Now why would a couple of American military officials let out of the bag that high ranking generals were being found out by using non-secure communications? Even if it seems obvious that this is a possibility, why point it out to the supposed opposition. If defeating the Russians is your true goal, why would you put them on notice that they are making it too easy?
Maybe beating Russia isn’t the true goal. It could be that the President needs a distraction from the disasters he is creating domestically. If that were the sole reason, why are there so many Republicans jumping on board? Do they not know better?
It may be that the Ukraine is such a grift mill that pushing taxpayer money through lines both party’s wallets. That could explain why so many congress-persons recently made trips to visit the besieged country.
There is no clearly defined victory for the US, and no oversight of where our dollars are going. Call me pessimistic, but a foreign conflict would be a great place to wash money before feeding it back to the US. Then it could end up in all kinds of pockets. Anywhere from military contracting houses, to local constituencies. Once it makes it back into the US, it could be used for all kinds of political malfeasance.
